Half organiser, half privacy tool — and it is the second half that makes it worth switching for.

Key takeaways
  • Auto-sorted albums by date, folder, size and name with no manual tagging.
  • The PIN vault removes media from the public gallery index, not just from view.
  • Built-in editor covers crop, filters, blur and video compression.
  • Works entirely offline — nothing is uploaded to sync.

Replacing a stock gallery is a high bar: it is the app people open most and notice least. We ran Gallery - Photo Album & Vault as the default gallery on an Android test device for two weeks, with a roll of about 18,000 images.

The vault is the reason to switch

A folder called 'Private' is an invitation. A real vault moves media out of the gallery index so it does not appear when someone swipes through your holiday photos, and does not surface when another app scans storage. Passport scans, insurance documents and personal photos belong there, and moving them took a single multi-select action.

Feature list

  • Albums auto-sorted by name, date, size and folder path.
  • PIN-protected vault for sensitive photos and videos.
  • Editor with crop, filters, blur and video compression.
  • Duplicate finder to clear near-identical shots.
  • Recycle bin that lets you recover deletions before emptying.

Scrolling performance held up on a library that made the stock gallery hesitate, and thumbnails cached quickly after the first index. Use a vault PIN that differs from your device lock — otherwise anyone who watched you unlock the phone already has the key.

  • Ads on the free tier
  • First index of a large roll takes a few minutes
